The Analysis of Verbal Behavior

Psychology, it has been alleged, has sadly neglected the study of language. Still, it could be argued that there exist dozens of psychological studies of selected problems in this area; as examples, investigations of vocabulary, child speech, and language ability could be cited. Moreover, we need only mention the writings of Gardiner (8), Kantor (10), Biihler (3), and De Laguna (6) to show that psychological theories and interpretations of language are not lacking. But it must be admitted that there has been a lack of progress on the part of psychology in arriving at a comprehensive theory of verbal behavior which will include a treatment of the heterogeneous facts established by formal linguistics and which at the same time can be integrated with systematic psychological theory. It is the purpose of this paper to attempt to present an outline of such a general theory.
